Mazda has by no means rushed into the age of the electric car. In 2020, the brand came with the MX-30, and so far it is the only electric car model from them.

The MX-30 was with Motor and NAF’s range test when it was new and went 16.5 miles in the winter and 22 miles in the summer before the battery was completely empty. It is, to put it mildly, quite scarce.

Nevertheless, the model has sold okay in Norway, with just over 5,300 copies since it was introduced, according to figures from the Road Traffic Information Council. That is probably half of Mazda’s new car deliveries in the period.

More to come

Now it looks like something more electric might be on the way from Mazda.

At the Beijing Auto Show, the brand is showing off the EZ-6, which will be the first model in what Mazda calls “a series of new electrified vehicles.”

The EZ-6 has been developed in collaboration with Mazda and Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., Ltd. (Changan Automobile), and will be launched in China by the end of 2024.

Changan Automobile is state-owned, and the smallest of what are often called “the big four in China.” The others are: Saic Motor, Faw Group and Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

SUV

In addition, they show the Mazda Arata concept model. The Arata will go into production by the end of 2025, also for the Chinese market, and is a medium-sized SUV.

The EZ-6 will come in two versions, an electric and a charging hybrid. The electric one should have a range of up to 600 kilometers, is 491 centimeters long and has rear-wheel drive.

The press release says nothing about whether the models will also be sold in markets other than China.

CONCEPT: Mazda Arata is currently called a concept, the production version should be ready at the end of 2025.
