A wolf was shot in Orkland municipality on Sunday. It is a violation of the Game Act. A search is now being carried out to clarify whether the animal was injured or not.

– Shots were fired, but no animals were killed, says Gry Aune, section leader at the State Administrator in Trøndelag, to VG.

On behalf of the State Administrator, the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate has carried out a search, but the wolf has not been found.

– If you do not hit, an assessment is made as to whether the animal has been hit or not. A search is carried out until it is certain whether the animal has been shot and hit, or is not injured and moves on. That is the phase we are in now, says Aune.

Not allowed on Easter Sunday

– But it is not allowed to hunt on Easter Sunday?

– Shots were fired and there is a general ban on hunting on Easter Sunday, that’s right, says Aune.

In the Wildlife Act it is stated:

“Hunting and trapping are not permitted in the period from and including 24 December to and including 31 December and not on Good Friday, Easter Eve and Easter Sunday.”

It was Avisa Sør-Trøndelag that mentioned the case first.

According to Aune, the wolf is probably the same individual that killed many sheep in Orkland municipality and neighboring municipalities last summer.

According to the State Administrator, several DNA samples have been collected in the area to be analyzed by Rovdata.

– Should the wolf be taken out in connection with license cancellation?

– It has been opened for license hunting of wolves in the entire region. Several permits have also been granted for the culling of wolves in this area in the past year, due to the large losses of sheep, says Aune.

The situation is currently unclear, and the State Administrator must decide whether the wolf should be declared healthy or not.

– The police were on the scene

Veronica Sahlén, section leader at the Norwegian Nature Conservancy, states that the shooting occurred during license suspension, which is administered by the State Administrator.

– Shots were fired and we have been on the scene. The wolf has not been found. Until we have gone through the control and checked everything, we will not comment further on what happened. The police have also been on the scene, she tells VG.

– Has the case been reported to the police?

– Not at the present time. This is an assessment we will make once we have gone through the information obtained in connection with our control.
