While SV has proposed a ban on the development of new cabin fields in Norway, Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum thinks it is good that more cabins are built.

– The whole idea of Norway being built up bit by bit is a very skewed narrative, says Vedum to VG.

At the same time, he emphasizes that there are poor cottage developments and the wrong type of projects, but has confidence that local politicians make wise decisions. Vedum is tired of the criticism against cottage development in Norway and points out that nearly 1.8 percent of Norway is used for housing, of which 8 percent is holiday homes.

– Almost nothing of Norwegian nature is affected by cottage fields. There is no reason to be ashamed of going to the cabin, says Vedum.

The government recently proposed stricter measures in cottage development where the municipalities must take more account of climate and energy.

SV, for its part, wants to introduce a national ban on the development of new cabin fields. Lars Haltbrekken, who sits on the energy and environment committee for SV in the Storting, told NRK last month that it is time to say no to new fields.

– We have seen an insane degradation of Norwegian nature in recent years, and the development of new cabins is one of the things that threatens the most, said Haltbrekken.
