The Pope washed and kissed the feet of female inmates

In a traditional Easter ritual, Pope Francis on Thursday washed and kissed the feet of twelve female inmates in a prison on the outskirts of Rome

The pope, who has been struggling with illness recently and canceled a Palm Sunday sermon, appeared healthy and smiling when he visited the prison in the suburb of Rebibbia.

– We all make small mistakes, big mistakes. But the Lord always awaits us with open arms, and he never tires of forgiving, the Pope pointed out.

It is a tradition that twelve people are selected each year to have their feet washed by the leader of the Catholic Church. The ritual is in memory of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper.

This year’s edition stands out because, for the first time, Pope Francis had chosen only women for the washing of the feet. He was the first to include women in the tradition and also the first pope to choose to wash the feet of non-Christians.
