There is a fire in an old apartment building in the center of Porsgrunn. Residents are asked to stay away and close windows due to noxious fumes.

– Large parts of the center of Porsgrunn now smell strongly of smoke, says supervisor Marthin Haugen to VG.

He points out that the fire gas contains toxins that they do not want people to get into their homes. Therefore, the call is clear:

– Close doors, windows and close ventilation systems, he says.

Not control – fighting spread

The fire service has many crews in the area, but they do not yet have the fire under control.

– It is a huge building. There is no immediate danger of spreading to other buildings, but it is windy, so you never know, says Haugen.

At first it appeared to be burning only from the attic floor, but now the fire has also spread to the floor below.

The fire service is fighting to prevent fire and smoke from spreading to parts of the building that are still untouched. They work both from within and around the entire building.

The police report that no injuries have yet been reported or that people live in the building. The police are talking to witnesses and keeping people and cars away from the scene.

Afraid that all is lost

Meierigården, or Porsgrunn Meieribolag, was built in the period 1899 to 1901. And it also makes an impression on the fire marshal when a building like this is in full flames.

– A great building, so we would like to be apart of that, says Haugen.

Today, the building houses, among other things, Porsgrunn Frivilligsentral, Linda’s skin care salon and Ravneloftet. The latter a haunted house on the top floor, run by volunteers.

NRK Vestfold and Telemark write that the leisure club had an event on Thursday evening.

– I was the last to leave there today. There were no signs of anything wrong then, says Helge Tverdal, who has built up the collection of Halloween effects in the attic.

He thinks all is lost.

– This is sad, he says to the channel.
