On the first Monday in May, Hollywood’s biggest stars don the most spectacular and elaborate outfits of the year, are made up and styled to their manicured fingertips and enter the slightly legendary steps that lead into the Met Gala in New York.
Best red carpet of the year?
She has been world-famous for over 30 years, but had to live a full 56 years before she was allowed to make her debut at the gala: “Baywatch” icon Pamela Anderson.
The star got a lot of attention last year when she ditched her make-up during fashion week in Paris, and she has also appeared make-up free in fashion campaigns and on several red carpets. Many were therefore probably surprised when Anderson arrived at The Metropolitan Museum of Art – wearing make-up.
Explains the comeback
Dressed in a champagne colored Oscar de la Renta gown with a corset and delicate draping, the star beamed at the photographers with a discreet but beautifully made-up face.
And why did the star choose to make this move right now?
– I feel that a very elegant woman has always lived inside me. And I feel that [Met-gallaen] really is the occasion where I get to be this woman, she explains in an interview with Vogue done ahead of the gala.
When Pamela decided to make a make-up comeback, she left nothing to chance as she wanted her make-up to be “dewy, soft and ethereal”.
It is the famous British make-up artist Pat McGrath who is behind the Met make-up. In 2019, McGrath was named one of the world’s 100 most influential people by the famous Time magazine.
– I am so grateful that I get to work with Pat (…) We had a long conversation about how photography has changed the way we use make-up. In the 80s and 90s we used very strong make-up, but then digital photography came on the scene, and you suddenly look different, says Anderson further, adding that she wanted to look romantic and sociable – but also “fixed” .
And on social media there are also several people who express enthusiasm for the 90s icon’s “look”.
“Beautiful and radiant with happiness”, “fortunately we have some women who age with class”, “natural glamour”, as well as “magnificent and elegant” are among the words of praise that marked the comment field on the Instagram profile of People Magazine.
Kudos for the new image
– Laughing a little at myself
In recent years, the 56-year-old has lived a more secluded life on Vancouver Island in his native Canada, where nature, flowers, the vegetable garden and maintenance work on the Arcady estate are in focus.
When she has occasionally appeared in the limelight, she has often been praised for showing herself without full make-up and for aging with dignity.
– I think we all start to look a bit funny as we get older. And I laugh a little at myself when I look in the mirror. I think: wow, is this really happening… what is happening to me? It is a journey. Mostly a nice one. I feel like people are rooting for me. I’m feeling good. I’m in a good place, she said in an interview with Elle in the summer of 2023.
