Several artists came practically naked at this year’s Met Gala.

--

– Vor, let’s just say it’s a nude dress, says Charlotte York in the first season of the cult series “Sex and single life”.

She’s talking about Carrie Bradshaw’s outfit, a beige mini dress with barely visible straps, signed DKNY.

It almost got its own role in the cult series that rolled across TV screens in the 90s. And with that, the “nude dress” was born.

Come in a towel

Now it’s everywhere again, on the catwalk, not to mention during yesterday’s Met Gala in New York.

Donning little more than a pantyhose, artist Rita Ora also showed off her nipples at the after-party.

She was not alone. Rapper Doja Cat looked like he had just come out of the shower on his way to the gala, wearing a towel wrapped around his torso and head. She then changed into another outfit, a white dress that looked soaked and was apparently braless.

Emily Ratajkowski, model and actress, also jumped on the nude trend. She walked the red carpet without a bra, in a dress with a bare back that covered little of the rear.

How did we end up here? ask the celebrity journalists in the Mail Online, pointing out: Superstars come semi-naked, and A-listers like Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Hailey Bieber and Blake Lively don’t come at all.

– Very emotional

Historic

The nude trend is not new. One of the world’s most talked about nude dresses is from the time before the term even existed. When Marilyn Monroe sang the birthday song for President John F. Kennedy in 1962, it was in one of the most talked about dresses in history.

The body-hugging garment was supposedly so tight that she had to put the dress on before it was sewn onto her. The dress, which was encrusted with pearls, has been sold at auction several times, most recently to a museum in 1999 for $1.3 million. It is supposed to be the world’s most expensive dress.

Incidentally, Kim Kardashian caused a stir when she was allowed to borrow the famous dress for the Met Gala in 2022.

– There is nothing more dressed up than the nude dress, and there is also nothing more naked than being slightly dressed, fashion expert Pia Henriksen previously told Dagbladet.

– Card between beautiful or vulgar

She has a point. To dress with almost nothing, according to the fashion expert, means that we accept it as a garment and as adequate clothing while the brain shouts “naked”.

– It is quite instinctive, and of course it is very exciting, she said.

But it all depends on who is wearing the dress.

Selected reuse

– Take Marilyn Monroe’s dress, for example – the one that Kim Kardashian borrowed at the Met Gala: It went from being vibrant, sexy and seductive to flat and dead, Henriksen said, and elaborated:

– A bit like when Kate Moss made the nude dress legendary in 1993, it was precisely because she wore it that it gained life and warmth. The same when it got its name in Sex and single life. There was a humor and a warmth there that worked. It’s short between beautiful or vulgar for the nude dress.

The fact that the nude dress has now appeared in the fashion scene again does not seem the least bit strange to the fashion expert. On the contrary.

– Dressing with nudity for women is popular again after a long time with modesty and “tent dresses”. Well, maybe not on the catwalk or the red carpet in celebrity culture, but around us on a daily basis, most people are quite well dressed in a lot of textiles. Backlash is always around the next corner. Because there is nothing innocent or random about the nude dress. It is a single big exclamation point, says Henriksen.
