Windows will demand a new world of performance

--

Intel has confirmed that Copilot, Microsoft’s Windows AI, will be integrated as a service in the OS and run locally with Windows DirectML.

300 new AI features coming to Intel Meteor Lake this year

The company says support is coming soon, timed with the new ones Core Ultra the CPUs. Intel also reveals what it means for a PC to be labeled an “AI PC:”

This is an unsurprising improvement that is already used by mobiles. The problem with Copilot and many other AI services on PCs is that they constantly send and receive information – it does not work optimally with larger jobs. NPUs will therefore be important in the years to come, but none of today’s machines come close to delivering enough power: at least 40 TOPS.

The answer to why they don’t run AI operations on the GPU is that they want to free up power and optimize battery life: hence a dedicated NPU.

The Snapdragon X Elite is the fastest with 40 TOPS with AI speed, and in second place, many places behind, is Apple’s M3 chip with only 18 TOPS. Both AMD and Intel offer 10 TOPS, and AMD 16 TOPS on selected machines. Intel is promising triple NPU speeds next year, and says it has a product on the way that will meet the 40 TOPS requirement. When it will be launched is unknown.
