Six workshop visits:

For several years, the screen on the Tesla has gone black. Now the buyers can raise the purchase.

In the spring of 2021, a married couple in Oslo bought a new Tesla Model 3 for NOK 447,000. In the summer of the same year, they advertised for the first time that the touchscreen occasionally goes black. The couple were given a workshop appointment, but Tesla Norge did not find out about the problems, neither on the first workshop visit, nor on the next five.

On the last workshop visit, the car was left inside for six weeks.

Not only did the screen occasionally go black. The car also had a number of other problems, including a computer error with the driver’s mirror – which Tesla was unable to figure out.

– Dangerous to life

But it is the screen that is the main problem. The owners of the car believe it is dangerous to drive the car, because it is not possible to see either the speed or to use the turn signals when the screen goes black.

Tesla Norway has dismissed the problems. But the consumer authorities do not.

The owners of the car first complained to the Consumer Protection Authority, then to the Consumer Complaint Committee. The latter has now given the buyers consent that the purchase should be canceled and that they should get the purchase price back.

– When the car’s screen still goes black, further attempts at improvement will not help, writes the Consumer Complaint Committee in its decision.

Autopilot

The owners had also paid NOK 30,000 extra to get Tesla’s autopilot system. Like several other Tesla customers have they complained that they are not allowed to use the function in Norway, due to legal restrictions.

The Consumer Complaint Committee believes that the responsibility for this lies with Tesla Norges. The fact that the autopilot system does not work has been included in the assessment for the purchase to be raised.

Still owners

Motor has asked Tesla Norway if they accept the decision, or if they appeal it. Tesla has chosen not to respond.

Almost two months after the decision was made, the buyers are still the owners of the car, according to the Norwegian Road Administration’s motor vehicle register.

Tesla Norway does not normally accept decisions and judgments they receive, as long as it is possible to appeal to a higher court. Decisions of the Consumer Complaint Committee can be appealed to the district court.
