(Elbil24): Many people who have bought a car in the last couple of years have received a model that starts beeping and warning if you drive a little too fast for a few seconds.
That is because in 2019 the EU decided that cars that were brand new on the market from July 2022 onwards should have such a function in place in the car – so-called “intelligent speed assistance”, or ISA as it is abbreviated.
With brand new means cars with new type approval, i.e. which are either brand new models or have changed so much that the manufacturer has brought in a new type approval for the car. The Tesla Model 3 is an example of the latter, which in the upgraded version that came out this autumn was changed so much from its predecessor that it had to get new type approval and thus the ISA notification in place.
On the other hand, if you buy the sibling model Model Y today, you will avoid this notification, since the car has not been renewed after July 2022.

Four possibilities
The notification can take place in four different ways, where the car manufacturers themselves choose how it is implemented.
It can be given in the form of sound or vibration. It is definitely the first one that is used the most, where you first get a visual warning on the screen/HUD a few seconds before it starts pinging.
Another possibility is feedback via the gas pedal where it starts to push back, or by the car itself reducing speed.
The function can be switched off by the driver, but must always be activated automatically when starting the car.

Should apply to everyone
We mentioned July 2022 as a limit for when cars with new type approval had to come with such notification, and now we are approaching another important date with regard to the ISA scheme.
From July 2024, EU regulations state that ALL new cars must come with such notification as standard, and not just those with new type approval.
In other words, this means that those who, for example, buy the aforementioned Tesla Model Y in June will not receive the notification, while those who wait a little longer will then get ISA included in the purchase.
How easy it is to switch off varies
Tesla is admittedly one of the few manufacturers that allows you to turn off the notification with one press. That’s far less than the entire seven presses we had to do on Smart #3.
Because it cannot be understated that these notifications do a lot of work, and that for many people they are experienced as more of an annoyance than a help. The EU’s forecasts do indeed indicate that the function should reduce the number of collisions in traffic by as much as 30 per cent.

We at Elbil24 are happy that it is possible to turn off the warning – when we drive around on Norwegian roads, we constantly experience that the car thinks the speed limit is lower than it is, and that it then starts beeping because it thinks we are driving. too soon when we don’t.
In addition, most cars have a deviation of 3–4 per cent from the speedometer to the real speed, so even when the speedometer shows 82 you are hardly driving too fast.
