A UK border system is currently out of order. This is causing chaos at British airports, writes Sky News on Tuesday evening.

Norwegian Hans-Erik Messelt Korsbøen (24) is on his way to London to visit his girlfriend, and has just fought his way through crowds of queues when Nettavisen talks to him just before midnight.

– I travel a lot back and forth to London and am used to Heathrow. Today it was quite hectic, at least considering that I have to get up quite early tomorrow to work, he says.

He estimates that he stood in line for well over an hour and a half.

– How many people do you think there were in the queue in front of you?

– I’m bad at that, but there were planes coming all the time. Probably over 500, says the 24-year-old.

– I have never seen anything like it

Messelt Korsbøen believes he is lucky to have landed at Heathrow early in the chaos that arose at the airport.

Nevertheless, he is aware that the situation was something completely out of the ordinary.

– I have never seen anything like it before. I’ve traveled quite a bit, mostly to the states, and it doesn’t come close to today’s situation, he says, as he rushes onto the train to central London.

Problems with passport control

Sky News has spoken to a spokesperson at Heathrow Airport in London, who says:

– The border authorities currently have a national problem that affects passengers who have to cross the border.

The problems will also affect Manchester airport and Gatwick airport, which, like Heathrow, is also located in London.

Gatwick Airport states that the problems are linked to the so-called e-gates at passport control. The e-gates will make traveling in the UK easier and use biometric information, such as fingerprints or a scan of the iris to verify the traveller’s identity.
