The husband arrested after the disappearance

The 40-year-old’s husband was arrested on Saturday at the airport in Miami, upon arrival from his native Serbia, where he claims to have stayed for several months.

– He has nothing to do with this. We hope, of course, like everyone else, that she is found and that she is okay, his lawyer, Ken Padowitz, previously told NBC.

Mysterious text messages

The missing woman originally lived in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, but moved to Madrid on the eve of last year.

Friends and family have said that she wanted to get away after a nasty divorce, and at the same time discover new places.

Then she disappeared – on February 2 – shortly after a man wearing a motorcycle helmet disabled the surveillance cameras at the block of flats where she had been living in the Spanish capital by spray painting the camera lenses.

The next day, two friends each received a message – one in Spanish and one in English – sent from her Whatsapp account that she had run off with a man she had met and that she would be gone for a few days.

One of them, Sanna Rameau, refuses to believe that it was her friend who sent her the text messages.

– She would never have made this up here. She had never done this here, she has previously told AP.

Police of no words

The disappearance has been investigated on both sides of the Atlantic.

Spanish police now state that the arrest was made in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of the Interior’s attaché office in Belgrade, the FBI and Colombian police.

The police have so far kept their cards close to their chest about the investigation.

A State Department spokesperson previously told NBC that they “cooperate closely with local authorities” in any case involving missing American citizens abroad, but did not provide details about the investigation into this disappearance.
