Military expert believes Russia has not followed its own manual.

– Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could have been far more successful if the Russian forces had followed their own military manual, says defense analyst Scott Boston to Business Insider.

Boston, a senior researcher at the RAND Corporation and former US Army officer, points out that Russia and President Vladimir Putin have a manual that covers all aspects of military operations. It provides detailed guidelines for how the forces should act in everything from tactical attacks to large military campaigns.

– Russia’s manual provides clear instructions for success in any military operation, says Boston.

Three critical errors

The military expert points to three major mistakes:

  • Lack of concentration: Russia spread its forces too far, making it difficult to achieve decisive victories.
  • Supply Lines: The Russian forces were unable to establish solid supply lines, leading to delays and chaos.
  • Underestimation of the enemy: Russian forces underestimated Ukrainian resistance and lacked a clear strategy for dealing with it.

The losses are increasing

The consequence of these errors has been significant losses of both personnel and equipment. Ukraine’s counterattacks have been successful on several fronts, leading to setbacks for the Russian forces.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Russia has lost over 200,000 soldiers since the start of the invasion.

Another factor that has affected the results negatively is the lack of coordination between the various military branches. Rather than operating as a unified entity, there have been instances where the Army, Air Force and Navy have acted independently.

– This fragmented approach has weakened Russia’s ability to carry out effective attacks, says Boston.

Consequences for the future

Experts warn that if Russia does not adjust its tactics, it will continue to face hardship in Ukraine. Boston emphasizes the need for Russia to follow its own military manuals more closely.

– The manual is there for a reason. It is based on many years of experience.
