Three ministers agree: Will give roads across the border a boost

– The security policy situation following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Sweden’s and Finland’s entry into NATO makes it necessary to cooperate more closely with our Nordic neighbours. We share a border with both Sweden and Finland, and Norway is becoming important as both a receiving and transit area for military personnel and materiel. This places high demands on selected roads, bridges, railways, ports and airports, says Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård in a press release on Tuesday.

The three ministers have spent Monday and Tuesday this week together in Narvik. The NATO exercise “Immediate Response” is organized there. The ministers have followed to see how the transport system can secure the military activity between the countries.

“Ports, railways, roads and airports must work well together, no link is stronger than the weakest link”, the ministers write in a joint statement they have sent out.

They will now strengthen their cooperation and are considering joining forces on a Nordic strategy. They want to put in place a long-term plan to develop and improve the various crossing points across national borders.
