European intelligence agencies are now warning that Russia is planning violent acts of sabotage across Europe. Several are advocating that Putin’s Russia is getting ready for a permanent conflict with the West.

The Financial Times writes that Russia has already begun to prepare secret bomb attacks, arson attacks and damage to infrastructure on European soil. The operations could be carried out by Russia directly, or via proxies and with apparently little concern for civilian deaths.

The newspaper quotes intelligence personnel from several different countries in Europe on the allegations about the Russian sabotage plans.

– We consider the risk of state-controlled acts of sabotage to be significantly increased. Russia now seems comfortable conducting operations on European soil, Thomas Haldenwang said at a security conference in Germany last month, according to the newspaper.

Haldenwang is head of domestic intelligence in Germany. The statements came just days after two German-Russian citizens were arrested on suspicion of planning attacks on military logistics centers in Germany on behalf of Russia.

On Sunday, the Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, said during a party leader’s debate on SVT that he himself is also aware of information which indicates that Russia has increased its ambitions to carry out sabotage in Europe.

– We work closely with other countries to be able to detect such cases, says Kristersson, according to Omni.

Mysterious train derailments on Ofotbanen

In its article, the Financial Times refers to several incidents in Europe which are now under investigation – which are suspected to have been carried out under the auspices of Russia.

Including two train derailments on the railway at the national border between Sweden and Norway. In December last year, a train carrying iron ore on its way to Narvik derailed in Sweden. Barely two months later, the same thing happened again on the Malmbanen, or Ofotbanen as it is called on the Norwegian side. A train with iron ore derailed right at the national border.

– The obvious conclusion is that there has been a real escalation of Russian activity, said Keir Giles at the British think tank Chatham House.

Heavy hacking allegations directed at Russia

On Friday, Russia was accused by NATO, the US and the EU of having been behind computer attacks against six European countries.

“The United States strongly condemns this malicious cyber activity,” said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

A senior person associated with a European government tells the Financial Times that Nato’s security services have shared information that Russia has carried out several sabotage actions, which were coordinated and on a large scale.

– These needle stick attacks we have seen so far are of course to create disruption, but they can also be used for disinformation. Russia also learns from these attacks, should they wish to hit Europe properly on a later occasion. They can be considered tests, says the source to the newspaper.
