Both a Bornholm association and the members of a Facebook group want to have the railway re-established on the island.

– Among other things, it will benefit tourism, it says.

It has been many years since residents and tourists have had the opportunity to take the train when moving around Bornholm. The last railway closed in 1968, but now several local forces are toying with the idea of getting one or more trains on the rails again, writes the website Turisme24.dk

From 1900 to 1916, three different railways were established on the cliff island so that you could take the train from Nexø to Rønne, between Almindingen and Gudhjem and on the Rønne-Allinge section, writes TV2 Bornholm.

The railways had a total length of 90.9 kilometers and were operated by three companies, which together formed the association De Bornholmske Jernbaner, through which the railway companies shared the operation of the railways.

Now, a number of zealots have expressed their desire for the Bornholm Railway’s route between Rønne and Allinge to be recreated. This is done through a Facebook group called “Reestablishment of the Rønne-Allinge railway”, which was created by former DSB employee Peter Sejersen on 6 April.

– The idea is that the restoration of the railway should be valuable for the people of Bornholm, as a supplement to the already existing public transport, and for tourism, where it should contribute to the unique and experience-rich Bornholm”, says the description of the Facebook group.

Since its establishment, the group’s members have come up with proposals for the construction of the track and which trains can be bought. They have also proposed a ticket price of DKK 33, which is based on a series of calculations that indicate that the price to re-establish the line will be DKK 500 million.

The Association De Bornholmske Jernbaner, which runs the railway museum DBJ Museum in Nexø, also wants to reopen railway operations on the island. The association’s members want and are working to recreate part of the railway between Nexø and Rønne.
