In a large-scale attack consisting of dozens of tanks, Ukrainian defenders are said to have destroyed at least 20 Russian tanks and driven the attackers back.

The massive battle is said to have taken place on Saturday. Several international media, including Forbes and Newsweek, refer to the violent skirmish, which ended in Russian defeat.

Spurred on by the capture of the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, the Russians are said to have launched a fierce onslaught against the new Ukrainian defensive lines outside the town.

One of the biggest tank attacks of the war

When the Russian generals gave the order to attack, an entire battalion of tanks must have been mobilized. This is roughly the same number of tanks as the Norwegian defense alone can make available in a critical situation.

A battalion usually has three armored squadrons, in addition to a couple of tanks in the staff squadron. In total, there are normally 33 to 60 tanks in a battalion.

According to Forbes, the attack should have been one of the largest tank attacks against Ukrainian positions since the invasion began on February 24, 2022.

– Lost a third of the tanks

But the Russians met with such strong resistance that they finally had to retreat. When the battle was over, at least 20 Russian tanks remained on the battlefield.

In addition, the Russians are said to have lost 12 infantry fighting vehicles belonging to Russia’s 6th tank regiment, which in turn is part of the 90th Russian tank division.

– When the smoke cleared, the Russians had left behind, on a road west of the ruins of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, a third of their tanks, a Ukrainian military source said.

Powerful despite the lack of ammunition

It is said to have been Ukraine’s 25th Brigade that first spotted the convoy and led the powerful counterattack, inflicting heavy losses on the Russians.

Despite problems with the supply of essential ammunition, Ukrainian brigades are still able to defend themselves using landmines, artillery, anti-tank missiles and attack drones.
