During its 23 years, Bethesda Game Studios has made a name for itself by delivering highly popular games, including Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. Over the past decade, however, it has taken longer and longer for the studio to launch new games. Todd Howard would like to change that.

In an interview with the Kinda Funny Games podcast, the Bethesda executive acknowledged that the studio spends a long time making games. He points out that it is never the plan for it to turn out that way, and that the team is always looking at solutions to speed up the process.

– It takes a long time to make them, and I think one of the things we focus on is of course making sure they are of the highest quality, but also finding ways to step up production. Because we don’t want to wait that long either, right? It’s never the plan, but we want to make sure everything is done right.

After the launch of Starfield last year, Bethesda has started work on The Elder Scrolls VI. In all likelihood, that game is still several years away, and any new Fallout won’t come until sometime after that again.

Launched in 2018, Fallout 76 is more popular than ever.

Given the rise in popularity of Fallout – thanks in large part to the TV series – Howard was asked if the studio has considered outside collaborations to bring out more games, such as when Obsidian was allowed to make Fallout: New Vegas. There are ongoing conversations about just that, answered the Bethesda top, but he is still satisfied with how the series is going.

– I would say that we have always had that type of conversation. We did a lot of stuff for the TV series. It might seem like there isn’t a new big game out, but we’ve added a lot of content to Fallout 76 based on the series. 76 has an amazing map expansion coming this summer with Skyline Valley, Howard said, continuing:

– So we’re looking at what we’re doing with the game series and asking ourselves if we’re happy with – I can’t reveal anything now – the future plans for the Fallout series. When is season two coming out? What do we do with mobile games? What do we do in Fallout 76. What do we do with this thing? What do we do with the other thing? When will these arrive?

Howard did not want to say what kind of “things” are involved. Bethesda has confirmed that it has started making plans for Fallout 5, but otherwise we don’t know anything. So it’s just a matter of continuing to wait.

– If I could snap my fingers and make it so that everything was launched and finished, I would do it. But the key is how we can deliver these at a high quality level, that is always the most important thing, Howard concluded.
