The channel Al Jazeera reports in the morning hours on Monday that Israeli soldiers have withdrawn from the hospital area.

A journalist from the AFP news agency and several eyewitnesses say that tanks and other vehicles have left the scene.

The health authorities in Gaza, which are governed by Hamas, state that there are dozens of dead bodies in the hospital area. A doctor tells AFP that more than 20 dead have been taken out.

The Israeli military (IDF) has not commented on the information.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz writes that it is reported that the hospital will now be completely out of business. Several of the buildings are said to be destroyed, some also on fire.

Israeli soldiers stormed the hospital on 18 March.

Then there were reports of explosions and gunshots inside the hospital area of Al Shifa in Gaza City. There has been fierce fighting at the hospital, which is the largest in the Gaza Strip, since then.

Israel claimed last week to have killed what it describes as 200 terrorists at the site. Human rights activists have called the fighting a direct attack on civilians.
