– We shouldn’t have it like that in the port of Bergen.
That is the clear verdict of the fire service’s task leader Frode Lie.
For those who made the trip to Nordnes to enjoy the sun this Saturday, you will most likely have felt that the nose has been biting in some places.
The reason is a major leak in the sea at Tollbodkaien.
– The leak happened on Friday evening, and bilges were laid out to limit the spread, duty commander at the 110 central Helge Lund tells BA.
Get an overview with a drone
At Nykirkekaien, several vehicles from the fire service are in place.
– We use a drone to get an overview and make a plan to get the spill sucked up, says Frode Lie.
He explains the strong smell from the mud with the fact that the wind is calm and there is no movement in the sea.
– Thus, the mess is left behind. It lies all the way from here towards Fisketorget.
Where the leak is coming from is currently unknown. Lie says that the police are investigating the case.
– Not good for the environment
It is unclear what has leaked and where it comes from.
– We don’t quite know what it is yet, but it smells strongly of diesel, says Lie.
BA experiences himself that the pungent smell is unpleasant to breathe.
Lie says that the fire service takes the incident very seriously.
– We can’t have it like that. It is not good for the environment or for people who sit in boats here in Vågen and breathe this in. I would not recommend breathing this in over time, says the task leader.
The fire service will call in a contractor to remove the spill.
– Hopefully it will get better during Saturday, but the work will probably continue on Sunday as well.
