Crown Princess Mette-Marit (50) is known for choosing accessories carefully, and especially in recent years we have seen her choose bags from suppliers other than the exclusive fashion houses.
The wedding dress revealed?
The bags she currently appears with are either reused from many years ago, or bags from lesser-known manufacturers – often local craftsmanship and sustainable design.
For example, the crown princess wore a pink clutch from Me & Wilma to the presentation of the Nordic Council’s awards last autumn. It is a Norwegian company that wants to promote good craftsmanship and fair trade mainly from the third world.
The castle made contact
The founders behind Me & Wilma are honored by their generous customer.
– Goes his own way
– The bag was bought directly from Me & Wilma after we were contacted by the Castle. It was the interest in sustainability and the story behind our products that led Slottet to us, Elin Zenker Aune tells Se og Hør.
She does not hide the fact that it means a lot that the Crown Princess is concerned with the right trade.
– It is fantastic that the Crown Princess will be a role model when it comes to making good choices when shopping. We are very grateful to everyone who helps to shine a spotlight on what the right trade can do for individuals and for the future, says Elin, who started Me & Wilma together with Anne Nordheim.
– Pretty thin in the ranks now
– We work with women’s groups and craft groups that produce goods with good quality and natural, sustainable materials. Fair trade is close to our hearts!
Help from known profiles
The Crown Princess’s bag is a handmade product from 4africa, a company in Kampala, Uganda. The bag is made of hand-rolled paper beads. The paper is bought locally on the market and is glued and varnished with organic materials.
New princess trend
– 4africa is our heart child, and was established in 2011. It is a socially sustainable company that helps women out of poverty by giving them an income through fairly paid work. This has major ripple effects in the local environment, says the entrepreneur.
– The women in 4africa also have nursery places for their children through a collaboration with Norwegian nurseries, which in turn provides a better basis for the future for the children as well, she continues.
Will not answer
They have had the help of famous people who have traveled down and contributed with design and training – including designer Nina Jarebrink (43), artist Bjørg Thorhallsdottir (49) and photographer Mona Nordøy (55).
Contrast
This is by no means the only bag with meaning that the Crown Princess has in her collection. In recent years, she has bought a number of bags from the Italian Maria La Rosa – bags that are handmade on old chair looms in Italy.
Mette-Marit also has several bags from the Mexican brand Paloma van den Akker, made by artisans in Yucatán using traditional techniques and natural fibres.
– Hardly accidental
Fashion and beauty manager in KK, Ida Elise Eide Einarsdóttir, has also noticed the crown princess’s choice of bags.
– This is a healthy contrast to all the designer bags. And then the crown princess is both concerned with needlework and with women’s rights – such as the right to work. This is fashion with meaning, in a way. It sends an important and correct signal, she says to Se og Hør.
