The 87-year-old pope, who is struggling with bad knees and breathing difficulties, was in place at the altar, but he also dropped out of participating in the cardinals’ procession around the obelisk in St. Peter’s Square.

Instead, he blessed the palm leaves and olive branches that the faithful carried from the altar.

Frans was expected to deliver the sermon midway through the service, and it had been distributed to the press in advance. But when an assistant handed him the glasses to read it aloud, he made it clear he would refrain.

But he read prayers during the service and ended with a long appeal for peace, saying he prayed for those killed in the “inhumane” attack in Moscow, and also asked for prayers for the people of Ukraine and Gaza.

After the service, he drove several times around St. Peter’s Square in a wheelchair and greeted some of the 60,000 believers who were present.
