The accident happened in the culvert that runs between Verksalmenningen and Haugesundsgata. A man in his 40s has died, says operations manager in the South-West police district Dag Steinkopf.

Relatives have been notified.

The emergency services received a report of a traffic accident at Storhaug in Stavanger at 11.14 today.

– We are actually not quite sure what has happened, says task leader Torleif Paulsen in the South-West Police.

– It appears to be a serious accident, the police wrote at 11.38 on Twitter.

There are two vehicles involved in the accident and one person has been reported injured. It concerns a passenger car and a lorry with a container.

The lorry driver has no physical injuries, the police say that he is in for questioning.

– We are now working with crime scene work and questioning. We need to collect information from people who may have seen something, says Paulsen.

The police will remain at the scene throughout the afternoon to carry out on-site investigations.

The culvert towards Haugesundgata is closed in both directions. It will be closed for a while, writes Vegtrafikksentralen.

– This is the main thoroughfare from Stavanger East and into the city centre, and it is a challenge for traffic in the area, says Paulsen.

Crime scene technicians are working at the site, which will be closed for several hours, confirms the incident leader.

The police currently have no further information about the accident.
