Skien, Telemark | Found a dead person in the water after searching for a man from Holmestrand

The discovery is confirmed by incident leader Kim Stokke in the police to Telemarksavisa (TA).

– We have discovered a human being in the water, says Stokke.

Just before 7pm on Thursday evening, the police were contacted by someone who had seen something that looked like a person out in the water at Skotfoss church.

– We have now been out on the scene together with the fire service and can confirm that we have made a discovery of what looks like a human lying in the water crust, says the task leader.

Volunteers have been looking for Jan Mathisen at Skotfoss since Sunday. Mathisen has an address in Holmestrand now, but lived in various places in Skien and Grenland for several years until autumn 2023.

– The person has not been identified, but we see the find in connection with the search for the man who has been reported missing from the area, says police inspector Odd Skei Kostveit.

Kostveit says that it is too early to be able to say anything about what may have happened to the person who was found. He further says that the person will be sent for an autopsy. The relatives of the missing man are aware of the find.

At 10.30 pm, crime scene technicians and the fire service had retrieved the person from the water.

Mathisen has been missing in the area since Saturday afternoon. He had been visiting a woman at Skotfoss, who was arrested by the police when she was walking around with a hammer. The woman was also reported for carrying a knife in a public place.

The volunteer search team must have made the discovery. The search crews, which today consisted of around 15 people, were divided into three groups. One of the groups must have concentrated on searching along the water.
