Intending to squeeze out as much nostalgia as possible this year before revealing the successor to the Nintendo Switch (it’s official now, by Furukawa himself), Nintendo thought summer was a perfect time to relive some Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)- classics, with a more competitive twist.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Now it has been officially announced that there will be a collection of 150 special modes which you can compete in alone, in local mode with up to eight players and in online mode (with weekly updated online leaderboards) to become the new Nintendo World Championships champion.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Nintendo World Championships aims to bring back the excitement of the in-person Nintendo World Championships that took place in 1990, 2015 and 2017, challenging players to compete in small challenges drawn from 13 off their first home console greatest hitswhich is as follows:

  1. Balloon fight
  2. Donkey Kong
  3. Excite bike
  4. Ice Climber
  5. Kid Icarus
  6. Kirby’s Adventure
  7. Metroid
  8. Super Mario Bros.
  9. Super Mario Bros. 2
  10. Super Mario Bros. 3
  11. Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
  12. The Legend of Zelda
  13. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Although this is a digital release, My Nintendo Store Europe will be selling a limited special edition physical cartridge that includes a set of five collectible sticks, 13 illustrated memory cards (one for each classic NES game included in this title) and a copy of the legendary gold NES “game pack” (display only, stand included), a souvenir of the one awarded as a prize at the original Nintendo World Championships in 1990.
