New raw version of the BMW M4

--

You may have guessed it, but a new BMW M4 CS is in the works. Yes, a Competition Sport of the fun-to-drive M4, and it can hardly be wrong.

The new one thus takes up the gauntlet of the BMW M4 CS introduced in 2017 which could flex with 460 horsepower, and rolls in the wheel tracks of the new M3 CS which arrived as late as last year. The new one thus places itself between the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the special edition BMW M4 CSL, and takes the driving pleasure of the 4 Series up a few levels. As usual with the CS editions, BMW has adjusted the chassis and reduced weight, among other things, through new carbon components, both of which are naturally important when cars have to swallow bends at breakneck speeds.

To get up these fastest, a 6-cylinder in-line engine with 550 hp works together with an 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox, M xDrive intelligent four-wheel drive and an Active M Differential on the rear axle, and BMW says that the new special edition has a dynamic balance you can rely on in any situation. Maximum torque, 650 Nm, is delivered from a low 2,750 revs and up to 5,950 r/min, while the drive unit offers maximum performance at 6,250 r/min and hits the redline at 7,200 r/min. All this is shown in 0-100 km/h, which goes away in 3.4 seconds, while 0-200 km/h takes 11.1 seconds. Furthermore, the BMW M4 CS manages the intermediate sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in 2.6 seconds in 4th gear and in 3.3 seconds in 5th gear, so overtaking here is a fairly easy task. The top speed of the special edition – as standard with the M Driver’s Package – is electronically limited to 302 km/h. The Active M Differential should contribute to the typical M feeling, and it is also possible to send even more power to the rear wheels via the M Setup menu. Yes, it is also possible to switch off the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, which allows for pure rear-wheel drive via 2WD mode. So yes, even drifting should be a breeze with the M4 CS.

For such a car, the response when the accelerator pedal is pressed is also important, so BMW has given it a new engine mount in addition to the fact that the car itself has also been stiffened. When going that far, brakes are also important, and the M4 CS has M Compound brakes with calipers painted in a choice of red or black, and it’s also possible to choose M Carbon ceramic brakes. Also standard are forged M light-alloy wheels in an exclusive V-design available in either matte gold bronze or matte black. Here there are 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, and the car is shod with track tires – so it’s really ready for the race track. It is of course also possible to get the M4 CS with tires that are better suited for more everyday driving. A test around the world’s most demanding race track, the dreaded Nordschleife, shows that the package works. Here, the M4 CS took 7.22 minutes around the barely 22 kilometer track, almost 7 seconds faster than what the M3 CS managed last year. The car must of course also stand out a little when it comes to appearance, and BMW Individual has ready the special paints Riviera Blue and Frozen Isle of Man Green Metallic only for the new M4 CS. It is also possible to get the car in M Brooklyn Gray metallic and Sapphire Black metallic.

There are also exposed carbon surfaces for both the roof and the two indents chiseled into the bonnet, while the headlights glow yellow instead of white like real racing cars – both when it welcomes the driver and during normal use. On the inside, there are of course bucket seats as standard, and no danger, they are warm. Because a BMW must mix both comfort and driving pleasure, and this of course also applies to a slightly more refined version such as the BMW M4 CS. BMW Norway says that they will open for orders towards the end of May, and have set a starting price of NOK 2,343,000 for the brand new BMW M4 CS. More precisely this:
