Google has announced the Pixel 8A. This is a mid-range phone that has historically had a lot in common with their top models.

The newcomer has received Google’s latest G3 processor and a number of AI functions that have until now only been available in the top models Pixel 8 and 8 Pro:
- Best Take, which makes it easy to put together the perfect group photo. You choose which facial expression you think best suits each individual, from a series of images.
- Magic Editor, which makes it possible to change the position and size of things in the image, or make the background stand out.
- Audio Magic Eraser, which removes distracting sounds – such as wind or crowd noise – from videos.
As on the top models and the most expensive Samsung Galaxy phones, you also get “Circle to Search”. It allows you to search for all kinds of information from anywhere on your phone. Whether you read about something, see something cool in a video or a detail in a photo, you can simply circle, highlight or tap on what you see, and the AI will understand what you want to know more about and show relevant results.

Slightly better specifications
The 6.1-inch screen has a refresh rate of 120Hz compared to the predecessor’s 90Hz, and 40 percent higher brightness of up to 2,000 nits.
The camera is unchanged from the 7A, with a stabilized 64-megapixel main sensor and an ultra-wide-angle lens as well as a 13-megapixel front camera.
The battery capacity is slightly higher than its predecessor, with 4492mAh. The phone also has wireless charging.
The phone has 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage space, with the option of 256 GB.
When it comes to the design, it has more rounded edges to make the phone more comfortable to hold, while the back is matte and the frame is polished aluminium. Google reports that the phone should withstand spills, but does not refer to it as waterproof.
Like other recent Pixel phones, it’s promised seven years of software updates, which is a lot for an Android-based mid-range phone.
Receives a significant price increase
The worst news is the price increase for this year’s model. While the predecessor Pixel 7a started at around NOK 5,500, you have to spend from NOK 6,690 for the Pixel 8a.
Our test will of course measure the phone against other bargains in the price range to find out if the Pixel 8a is worth the price.
The phone is available for pre-order now, and will launch on May 14.

Could be a pure AI event
The launch of the phone comes as a surprise because it was first expected during Google’s “IO conference” later this week.
The early launch suggests that the company has plenty of other things to talk about on May 10.
As improvements to Gemini, which is their ‘chatbot’ or AI language model and which so far hasn’t quite measured up to ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot.
Recently, their Gemini image generator had to be withdrawn because, among other things, it produced images of Vikings or Sami people who had the most in common with Native Americans in appearance, or German Nazi soldiers who consistently resembled people of African or Asian descent.
Google received criticism for not representing indigenous peoples or people groups in a historically realistic way.

Combined with the fallout from the launch of its chatbot about a year ago, where it gave false information, there is pressure on Google to convince why its artificial intelligence is the best.
