Last week the news came that John Achterberg, Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, is leaving Anfield after the season is over. It marks the end of a 15-year career with the Reds.

The 52-year-old Dutchman is on an expiring contract, and even with compatriot Arne Slot entering the doors, Achterberg will not continue in his position with the Reds.

Nor does it look like he will be unemployed for long, because according to Simon Mullock in The Mirror, the goalkeeping coach is wanted by none other than Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq.

“John Achterberg is ready to join Steven Gerrard’s team at the end of the season with Liverpool. He has been offered a new challenge,” writes the English newspaper.

Gerrard, who has been both player and manager (for the U18 team), at the same time as Achterberg, probably knows the Dutchman very well from their time together at Anfield.

There has been no news about Claudio Taffarel and Jack Robinson, who are Liverpool’s two other goalkeeper coaches in the first team.

More on the way out

In the wake of Jürgen Klopp’s announced departure in January, several other coaches in and around Liverpool’s first team have announced that they would also leave the club after the season.

One of them is assistant coach Pep Lijnders, who has been Klopp’s faithful right-hand man for several seasons. He has been linked to both Ajax and Besiktas. Paul Joyce in The Times has, among other things, reported on the former’s interest.

There has also been speculation as to whether Vitor Matos, one of Klopp’s younger coaches in Liverpool, can continue with the Dutchman. In any case, the 36-year-old will not continue his career in Liverpool.

Peter Krawietz, Andreas Kornmayer and Andreas Schlumberger are also confirmed out the doors when Klopp packs his things at Anfield in a couple of weeks. Arne Slot will probably enter the doors, with a new team around him.
