Like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk is on an expiring contract next season, and so far there have been no reports that anyone is close to an extension. But the former seems to be taking the situation with crushing calm.
– There is not much to talk about, because there is nothing new to report. The club is busy getting the new manager in, so that is probably the main priority. I am very happy here and love the club. Liverpool is a big part of my life, he told the press after the game against Tottenham on Sunday.
– Now I am concentrating on the last two games, and then the club is working with the new manager. It will be a big transition, and I will be part of it, says van Dijk, who in other words goes a long way in establishing that he will play in red next season as well.
– There will be many changes, and I look forward to being part of it.
Lots of exciting things going on
The captain has received the news that it is compatriot Arne Slot who appears to be Klopp’s successor.
– Nothing has been announced yet, but I have seen the rumors that he can come in. But first we have to play two more games, then we’ll get the news when it comes. In any case, there is a lot going on, and it will be exciting, he says.
The 32-year-old took over as captain before this season, and he will do his part to ensure that the next manager, or head coach, is as well received as possible.
– So far, no decision has been made about the manager. Michael Edwards is back and Richard Hughes will be sporting director. That is what has been confirmed, and I trust that the club will make the right decision. There are many and big changes, and I find it interesting and exciting.
Happy with the season
The centre-back has led Liverpool to his first trophy as captain and believes the Reds must be satisfied with the season, even if there was an ever so slight anticlimax at the end.
– If you had offered us what we have achieved now before the season, I think we would have accepted. We want to win and were close but were not good enough in the decisive moments. That’s life. We must stick together, he says.
Van Dijk believes the team can be even better.
– We have to take the experience with us and take lessons so that we can improve. We can take that with us into the next season. But now we want to give the manager a nice farewell.
