Elleville scenes of jubilation as Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich were promoted to the Premier League.

At the center of the events is former United coach Kieren McKenna, who has accomplished something close to a miracle with the team from Suffolk.

Last season the opponents were Forest Green, Morecambe, Fleetwood and Cheltenham.

Next season they are called Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

In the space of two seasons, Ipswich have gone from League One to the Premier League and now McKenna gets the opportunity to lead his team against old club Manchester United.

It’s no wonder the 37-year-old was grinning widely when Sky Sports spoke to him after the game.

– This means an enormous amount. I’m very proud of what we’ve done and you can see what this means for the players and the city. There has been hard work from everyone and support for the project throughout. We have a big job to do in preparing for the Premier League, but that job only starts in a few days, a celebratory McKenna grins to Sky.

The 2-0 win in the last round of the league against Huddersfield was the perfect way for McKenna and Ipswich to go up, but The Tractor Boys would have gone up with a loss as Leeds lost 1-2 at home to Southampton.

McKenna’s adventure at Ipswich started halfway through the 2021/22 season when he took over the club and stabilized a club that was struggling badly. In their first full season they were promoted to the Championship, and this season Ipswich, Leicester and Leeds have fought a fierce battle for the two direct promotion places.

Former McKenna pupil from United’s academy and first team, Axel Tuanzebe, could celebrate promotion to the Premier League as an Ipswich player.
