Trabzonspor must play six home matches in Turkish league football without an audience. The reason is the supporters’ violent storming of the pitch against Fenerbahçe last month.

The punishment was imposed by the disciplinary committee of the Turkish Football Association on Wednesday. Trabzonspor is also sentenced to pay a fine of one million kroner.

Trabzonspor is very unhappy with the verdict. In a https://twitter.com/Trabzonspor/status/1775536409337581728 on X, the club writes that they expect the Turkish football president to resign from his position.

– The punishment is neither legal, reasonable nor morally correct, writes the club in a letter signed by vice-president Taner Saral.

Supporters of Trabzonspor stormed their own home ground after the 2-3 loss to Fenerbahçe in mid-March. It triggered a basketball attack with the away team’s players and coaches.

The Fenerbahçe players and referees were protected by security personnel as they fled towards the dressing room of the match in question. The match had been stopped several times after Trabzonspor fans threw various objects onto the pitch.

Fenerbahçe, which has Joshua King in its ranks, reacted strongly to the row and subsequently held an election in which they voted on whether to withdraw from the Turkish top league. The proposal was voted down.

– It is not an option until the general meeting at the end of the season, said Trabzonspor chairman Ali Koc, according to the BBC.

The police arrested twelve people after the riot.
