In 2022, three people were convicted of complicity in drink-driving after a fatal accident. The three had left the car when the accident happened, but they were still convicted in the case that ended up in the Supreme Court.

This spring, another case will appear in the district court. There, a 19-year-old died in a car accident and both the driver and the three other passengers are now facing charges.

– The offense occurs when you know that a driver has been drinking. You can be prosecuted even if you were not even a passenger in the car, says specialist motor specialist at Frende Forsikring, Roger Ytre-Hauge.

Fine to drink

Over time, nationwide surveys carried out for Frende have shown disturbing attitudes towards drink-driving.

  • 16 percent say “no” or “don’t know” about whether they would stop someone who has been drinking from driving.
  • 21 per cent say they have driven a car se10 per cent say it is fine to drink a glass before driving without knowing if they were sober.
  • 10 percent say it is fine to drink a glass before driving.

What is a glass?

– This shows that there are a number of dangerous attitudes towards drink driving out there. But the respondents know that it is dangerous to combine drinking and driving, because 74 per cent say that they are afraid of drunk drivers in traffic. It is actually what we fear the most, says Ytre-Hauge.

– The alcohol limit is 0.2 in Norway and for many it is a common opinion that one glass is fine. But what is a glass? Is it one beer? A glass of wine? And how big is a glass of wine? The safest thing is to have zero tolerance before you drive, says the specialist manager at Frende Forsikring, in a press release.

He also reminds that factors such as gender, age and weight have a lot to say about how much blood alcohol you get after one drink.

Taking a big chance

According to figures from Oslo University Hospital, a woman of 58 kilograms can reach the blood alcohol limit of 0.2 with a 0.33 liter light beer. A man of 70 kilograms can achieve the same blood alcohol content with 0.5 liters of light beer.

– You take a big chance when you get into a car with a drunk driver. The obvious risk is that to your own life, but you can also be punished afterwards. Drop the car one too many times rather than take chances, says Roger Ytre-Hauge in Frende Forsikring.
