Luis Rubiales was arrested by Spanish police in the capital Madrid on Wednesday and released again after questioning. He is suspected of money laundering and corruption.
Several Spanish media have photos and video of the arrest at Madrid airport. A few hours later he was released.
It happened as part of the investigation into money laundering and corruption in connection with the Spanish Football Association’s agreement to move the domestic Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
Recently, Rubiales’ residence and office were searched by Spanish police. A total of eleven buildings were included in the raid.
Documents were seized in addition to seven arrests, and a further five people were put under investigation, said the country’s public prosecutor.
Rubiales arrived in Madrid on a flight from the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.
He has already been charged with sexual assault in connection with the much-discussed kiss after the World Cup final last summer. Rubiales then involuntarily kissed the star striker Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth, and afterwards the prosecution opened an investigation against the top football player.
The prosecution believes he should be sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.
