A video clip of Conor Gallagher which is now spreading online has caused the Premier League club Chelsea to come out with a message.
In the clip, the midfielder is seen ahead of Saturday’s match against Burnley, where he stands with his teammates and some mascots in the players’ tunnel. The two young mascots naturally both want to greet the popular Chelsea captain.
However, many people have become concerned that Gallagher gives one boy far more attention than the other and in connection with the sharing of the clip on social media, several accuse the midfielder of racist behavior and discrimination.
– Totally unacceptable
In a press release, Chelsea wrote on Wednesday that the clip was taken completely out of context.
– Chelsea have been made aware that a clip from Saturday’s match against Burnley is circulating on social media. It has been largely taken out of context, says the statement from the London club.
– The subsequent incitement and defamatory comments directed at Conor Gallagher are totally unacceptable.
The Premier League giant further emphasizes that Chelsea is a club where everyone is welcome.
– We are proud to be a club that promotes diversity, an inclusive club where people of all cultures, communities and identities should be welcome, says the press release.
Captain at Chelsea
Gallagher has been in the Chelsea system since 2008 and the 24-year-old is now captain of the blues from London.
He has previously been on loan at clubs such as Charlton, Swansea, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace.
In the last two seasons, he has established himself in the blue shirt and played 35 league games last season, and is on the books with 27 games in the league so far this season.
He has also won 12 games for the English national team.
