Russia: – Military forces occupy Moscow

May 9 marks Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and is a public holiday in the country.

Last year, the celebration was partially canceled in several places in Russia due to a lack of forces and tanks. These were then in Ukraine.

It is unclear whether this year too there will be fewer soldiers and military vehicles in the parade as a result of the war, but pictures show that planning for the commemoration is now well under way.

Before the commemoration in 2023, it was expected that Russian President Vladimir Putin would make major attacks in Ukraine to show strength to the Russian population.

This year, the Russian military is said to have received marching orders to capture the Ukrainian town of Tjasiv Jar in Donetsk by the Soviet “victory day” on 9 May, as Dagbladet has previously mentioned.

Strategically important

The small Ukrainian town has been under near-constant shelling since the Russian presidential election in March, which Putin expectedly won.

Chasiv Yar by Ukraine’s military to be strategically important, because it has served as a regrouping point and advanced artillery base for the Ukrainian army.
