Among those behind the new music film festival is ring fox Tom Skjeklesæther, who is returning to his hometown where he once organized the legendary Down on The Farm festival.

The Halden International Music Film Festival takes place from 16 to 18 February and is opened by Åse Kleveland. Each day has its own theme, and it starts on Thursday with Norwegian Film Day.

The theme is a perspective on music films in Norway today. On Friday, films from Texas during the day, and the city of Austin in the evening, are on the program, while Saturday offers a folk festival with a film and concert.

Famous names

Also on the program is Egon Holstad, who presents his favorite music film “The Byrd Who Flew Alone”, dedicated to Gene Clark, the film scholar Gunnar Strøm from Høgskulen i Volda who talks about animation in music videos based on “Take On Me” from a-ha, while Arvid Skancke-Knutsen presents recent Norwegian music videos.

There will also be debate, such as when Thomas Seltzer, Egon Holstad and Eirik Mosveen meet to address attacks on democracy from a rock perspective. It is led by film reviewer Ida Madsen Hestman.

From the USA to Halden

From the USA comes filmmaker Joe Nick Patoski, who has been writing and talking about Texas music for more than 50 years. Not just in book form – he has the film “Sir Doug & The Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove”, a film about Doug Sahm that he directed.

Also coming to Halden is Jeffrey Brown, who won the audience award for “The Story of Saxon Pub” at SXSW. He will talk about the process up to the finished film in the festival’s specialist programme.

Among other films shown, the organizer highlights “Without Getting Killed Or Caught”, which deals with two of Texas’ greatest songwriters, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. The David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream”, “Heaven Stood Still – The Incarnations of Willy DeVille”, “Meet Me in the Bathroom”, “The Last Waltz” and “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song”.
