The Meteorological Institute has issued a danger warning for snow on mountain passes and higher road sections in Troms on Thursday evening and night to Friday.
According to the meteorologist’s latest forecasts, the snow line will go from 300 to 400 meters above sea level. This means that both the E6 over Gratangsfjellet and Kvænangsfjellet, as well as the E8 over Helligskogen, can be affected by difficult driving conditions.
“During the night to Friday, 10-15 cm of snow is expected. Winds from the west can cause snow drifts in exposed places,” the warning says.
The snow line is falling
State meteorologist Maiken Vassel explains that showers will come in from the sea during Thursday afternoon and evening.
– There is low pressure at Jan Mayen. It produces showers that first come in along the coast in the south, then move north. When the front passes it is still relatively warm, but the showers at the rear are colder, says Vassel.
– Then the snow line drops to 400 metres.
– But it doesn’t reach the lowlands?
– No, it stays at 300-400 metres.
Transient
Vassel points out that it is always difficult to know whether the snow actually settles on the ground, even at high altitudes. The temperature on the ground will be decisive for whether the snow melts or settles as slush or snow.
In any case, you must wear the right shoes if you are going out on the road tonight or early Friday.
– There can be quite dense snow showers, says Vassel when she looks at the latest forecasts on Thursday morning.
Already beyond Friday, temperatures will rise again and any precipitation will come as rain. However, it is unlikely to be short weather this weekend.
At Bardufoss, the temperature can be exactly ten degrees on Saturday and Sunday. In Tromsø, the temperature will rise to eight degrees.
