Several people caught a fighter plane that flew over the center of Oslo today, Wednesday 8 May. The reason was not accidental.

8 May is liberation day, and in connection with this the day was marked at Akershus fortress.

– In connection with the celebration of liberation and veterans’ day on 8 May, the Air Force carried out an overflight with F-35s over Akershus fortress at 3 p.m., the Norwegian Armed Forces inform Avisa Oslo.

On 8 May 1945, Norway became free again after five years of occupation. Since then, the Norwegian Armed Forces have celebrated Liberation Day every year.

The experience from the war led to Norway becoming an active contributor to peace and stability in the world. Since 1945, over 100,000 Norwegians have served in around a hundred international operations worldwide. In 2011, the government established veterans’ day. This coincided with Liberation Day, which was named Liberation and Veterans Day.

At 15.00 on Wednesday there was a main ceremony at Festningsplassen. The ceremony started with a flyover over Akershus fortress before a wreath was laid at the National Monument by a representative of the royal house.

After this, the Prime Minister’s speech and the soldiers’ speech were given, before a medal ceremony was held where nine people this year received the medal for their efforts against the fire on board “Britannia Seaways” in November 2013.
