Ethiopians were tried to be forcibly deported from Norway – refused entry to their home country – Document

--

Betelhem Tamre Bitew was forcibly returned to Ethiopia before the weekend, but had to make the return journey after fifteen hours.

If this wasn’t enough, she escaped Trandum yesterday. Several Ethiopians have now been released, Klassekampen writes.

Bitew has lived in Norway for almost nine years without a residence permit.

On Friday evening, she was escorted by two police officers on a scheduled flight to Addis Ababa. There they were met by border inspectors who would not let her into the country. After fifteen hours of waiting at the airport in the Ethiopian capital, she had to make a return journey together with the Norwegian police, because the documents she was equipped with were not valid, writes the newspaper.

Many Ethiopians in Norway are to be sent out of the country

The Norwegian authorities had thus not realized that Ethiopia requires travel documents issued by the Ethiopian authorities.

After several rounds with different departments at the airport, the Norwegian police officers had to bite the bullet and buy a return ticket to Bitew.

Bitew’s lawyer André Møkkelgjerd now believes that if this is the practice in Ethiopia, then all Ethiopians in Norway must be released from Trandum and allowed to stay in Norway.

– If it turns out that it is not possible to carry out returns, then the grounds for detention will cease to exist. The detention then no longer follows a legitimate purpose, says Møkkelgjerd.

Jon Andreas Johansen, section leader in the joint unit for legal, analysis, border subjects and intelligence in the Police’s immigration unit, says that they cannot comment on individual cases for reasons of confidentiality.
