I suggest that Bergen municipality introduces summer school and summer jobs for young people. Summer school has been a success in Oslo since 2006. It is a free school service for students from 1st to 13th grade and is a unique opportunity for learning and coping beyond the ordinary school year.
The pupils are engaged in exploratory and curiosity-driven learning, which promotes the joy of learning. At the same time, emphasis is placed on basic skills such as swimming, reading and arithmetic. I myself have worked in the summer school for several years and have seen the positive effect it has on students, both those who thrive in school and those who struggle in the normal school environment.
The summer school provides students a positive experience of learning, which can be very motivating. It also acts as a preventative against gang crime by giving young people something meaningful to engage in, rather than letting them wander around town.
The summer school provides important support to children and young people who may not have the opportunity to participate in exciting activities throughout the summer holidays. This is particularly important in a time of rising prices and expensive times, when many families may not be able to afford to go on holiday.
Another is to offer a job for youth in the district. Many young people lack a network that can help them enter the labor market. It is therefore demanding for young people to get a holiday or part-time job, especially for those under 18. By offering young people a job, we can give them valuable work experience and a positive first encounter with working life. This can also help to discourage crime by giving young people an attractive alternative.
So dear Bergens, I know you don’t like looking over the mountain to Oslo. But if there is one thing Oslo has a lot of experience with, it is crime, and then you can see and learn. So from a teacher at the summer school in Oslo, the conclusion is clear: Bergen municipality should consider introducing summer school and summer jobs for young people.
These are measures that can help promote the joy of learning, fight youth crime and give young people the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. It is time to take action to improve the situation for our young people.
