BERGEN (Dagsavisen): On Thursday, inspectors from the Swedish Road Administration were in place at the Hurtigrute terminal in Bergen. Many Russians are on their way to the national meet in Kongeparken outside Stavanger this weekend, and take the Danskebåten from Bergen via Stavanger.

However, the quay was the last stop for a Russian bus with Russians from Ålesund. Because the interior and accessories were in no way legal or safe, according to the Swedish Road Administration.

– The National Roads Administration discovered that the bus is a death trap if an accident were to occur, writes inspector Lars Harald Drange in an inspection report.

Roof load

Among the things the inspectors found were a number of loudspeakers and power generators that were placed on the roof, despite the fact that roof loads were not permitted on the bus. It also had headlights mounted on the side, so that it was far too wide for the road.

The Russe bus is approved in Sweden for 62 passengers, of which 33 are standing seats.

Drange lists further discoveries:

– Inside, there was a slack rope hanging from the ceiling which will act as a restraint device for 33 standing passengers, all the seats were sideways and without seat belts. There were only two windows as emergency exits, they were marked and had an emergency hammer. To fill up the generators with fuel, you have to climb onto the roof through a hatch. According to Norwegian rules, a bus with more than 61 passenger seats must have six emergency exit windows and three roof hatches.

The bus was immediately banned from driving as the driver could not show a so-called community permit, which also gave the company that owns the bus a fine of NOK 6,000. In addition, the company is reported for several deficiencies in the documentation.

Boarded on foot

While the Russian gang boarded the Danskebåten, the bus was left on the quay in Bergen. As it was driven with Swedish plates, it can only be driven in Norway for 20 days, before it has to return across the Swedish border.

– This bus has been driving in Norway for some time already and will not be able to drive legally until May 17, Drange says.

According to him, renting buses from abroad is a worrying trend.

– It has become such a thing in the Russian bus environment that foreign buses are hired that are very dangerous. There should be as many side-facing seats and standing places as possible, there should be a crown on the roof and power generators, in addition to an enormous music system. This is a trend that goes in the wrong direction as it puts road safety aside.
