In the aftermath of a car fire in the garage of the Vestkanten shopping center in Bergen, the West Police District has issued a plea to the owners of the around 80 cars left in the parking facility.
– These cars must not be started, but must be towed to a suitable place for cleaning. Motorists who have parked in the garage’s basement and first floor must contact their insurance company for further handling, the police wrote on their X-channel on Monday afternoon.
Smoke
Operations manager Tore-André Brakstad tells Dagsavisen that they received a strong request from experts to keep the cars parked on site.
– Cars that have been parked in a smoky environment must not be started, as this will worsen the smoke damage in the cars, according to professionals. I assume that it is about the ventilation bringing the smoke further into the system of the car and causing the smoke and smell to stick around for a long time. The cars must be cleaned of smoke first. But there is no danger to the engine, says the operations manager.
Now the affected cars must be picked up one by one by car salvagers in the cramped garage.
– We do not decide how it will be organised. It will be up to the insurance company and the tow truck companies to coordinate this. It will probably take some time, and some will have to be sorry for having to wait, but that is how it was desired from the insurance companies to do it. In any case, it will be a good day for the car recovery companies, says Brakstad.
Uncertain cause
Earlier in the day, the fire service was on the scene and put out a fire in a vehicle. The extinguishing work took around half an hour, and one person suffered smoke damage in connection with the fire. The person was treated by health personnel on the spot.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
– The car that caught fire has been towed out of the parking facility and will continue for investigations, says Brakstad.
