Trond Mohn, Billionaire | Mohn gives another gift

For over 30 years, the generous billionaire from Bergen has given very generous monetary gifts to good causes around the country.

An overview in Finansavisen from 2021 showed that at that time Mohn had given away a total of over five billion kroner to various purposes. Since then, there have been even more gifts.

Very often it is Tromsø that benefits from Mohn’s generosity. In sum, we are talking about billions of dollars just for the Tromsø community.

UNN and Tromsø Sports Club in particular have benefited from the generosity. As recently as March, UNN received NOK 95 million for a new PET/CT machine, as well as a further NOK five million for conversion costs, installation, training, technical courses, skills development and assistance for research. So NOK 100 million in total.

How many lives Trond Mohn has helped save with his constant gifts to health and research is hardly possible to measure. But there are not quite a few who can thank the people of Bergen for life or better health.

Health, public health and sport go hand in hand, and sport is close to Trond Mohn’s heart. Both TUIL and especially TIL have noticed this. On Friday, TIL received another monetary gift from its major benefactor.

This time the club receives NOK 25 million, which is earmarked for upgrading the Romssa Arena (formerly Alfheim Stadium). Thus, TIL meets the requirements to play the European Cup in late summer.

Where rich Norwegians flee to Switzerland to avoid having to give back to society, Trond Mohn continues to give with the greatest self-sacrifice and joy.

For almost 20 years, Mohn has made constant contributions of millions to Tromsø Sports Club. We are hardly taking it too seriously if we claim that Tromsø would not have played at the highest level in Norwegian football without the Mohn millions. There is a lot of good public health in having a team that brings together the city and the region as TIL does.

It is difficult to imagine that there is an individual who has done more for Tromsø and Northern Norway in this century than Trond Mohn. And it is by no means a matter of course that a billionaire from Bergen should be so generous towards Northern Norway and the region’s capital.

On the contrary, Mohn is a rare exception to the rule. Where rich Norwegians flee to Switzerland to avoid having to give back to society, Trond Mohn continues to give with the greatest self-sacrifice and joy.

As we know Trond Mohn, he doesn’t expect to get anything in return, but Tromsø should find a proper way to show their gratitude. A bust or a statue is hardly in Mohn’s spirit, but we encourage the city’s leaders to put their heads down. Mohn’s great love for Tromsø must be answered with the greatest tribute, marked in a concrete way.
