(in Finnmark): The company H2Carrier, based in Fornebu, announces plans to establish two wind power plants in Finnmark. The company writes in a press release that they submitted a notification to NVE with the development plans by the deadline of 22 April.

They want to get the Oksefjorden wind power plant on Skjøtningberg on the Nordkinnhalvøya and the Rubbedalshøgda wind power plant located in Varanger, on land located in Båtsfjord and Berlevåg municipalities.

– The plans have been designed through constructive dialogue and in collaboration with the host municipalities and formal planning initiatives have already been submitted for consideration in the municipalities’ technical committees and municipal councils, the company writes in the press release.

The projects have a planned installed output of 1.55 GW with an estimated annual production of 6.4 Twh, as well as a total production volume of hydrogen and ammonia of 109,000 and 610,000 tonnes per year respectively.

“Together, the two projects will be able to contribute approximately 3.9 per cent of Norway’s goal of cutting CO2 emissions until 2030,” it says.

Processing in the host municipalities

Plans are therefore also being made for two wind power plants in combination with liquid production units for hydrogen and ammonia. H2Carrier writes that the plan is to use new renewable power in its floating facility which is anchored along land.

– This avoids major irreversible natural interventions that are traditionally associated with the construction of industrial plants for hydrogen and ammonia production.

Arrangements are also being made for wind power to be refined in the host municipalities of Gamvik, Lebesby, Båtsfjord and Berlevåg, which the company believes will contribute to local and regional value creation in the form of long-term jobs and strengthening of the municipal and county economy.

– We are pleased to be able to present plans for two large green energy projects in Finnmark built on technologies and processes where Norway has advantages from its experience as an offshore oil and gas nation. It is also important to us that, through good constructive dialogues with the host municipalities, we have designed and anchored the premises for the projects in such a way that the host municipalities support the plans, says managing director Mårten Lunde of H2Carrier.

He adds that limitations in grid capacity are a bottleneck for the development of renewable power in Finnmark, but that the company plans to establish the industry close to the wind power plant, in order to avoid this bottleneck.

– Then we can realize green energy projects without being dependent on further development of the central grid, says the director.

Before a license for development is possibly awarded, NVE must determine an investigation program and a consultation process that includes impact analyzes and consultations.
