As early as 07.00 on Thursday morning, the snow will fall over Eastern Norway. Oslo must prepare for a white day.

– It looks like there may be around 5 to 10 centimeters of snow in the area around the Oslofjord, says Hanne Beate Skattør, head of duty at the Meteorological Institute.

It will snow evenly throughout the day, so there will be snow on the roads during the afternoon rush hour, she says.

– I recommend everyone who has changed to summer tires to leave the car on Thursday.

– The consequences we expect are that it may take a little longer in traffic, allow plenty of time and don’t stress, she says.

The winter weather will decrease beyond Thursday evening, says Skattør.

Worst in 30 years

During the night to Wednesday, Sweden was also hit by snowy weather.

– I have not been involved in such extensive snow since 1995, says assistant rescue manager Göran Melin to Aftonbladet.

Those who were hardest hit queued all night until Wednesday. The reason was that the roads were blocked by large trucks stuck together. The rescue service removed the fences between the carriageways to help motorists out of the queue.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is prepared for the return of winter over Southern and Eastern Norway. They ask motorists who have already switched to summer tires to use common sense and not drive out in the snowy weather.

Lasse Berge is section manager for operations in Veivesenet’s division east. He says they have full winter readiness until April.

– All the equipment we need is available, he tells Aftenposten.

– We have had a round with our contractors, and they are ready, he adds.

Routes: Be prepared

Ruter’s press officer Øystein Dahl Johansen says that Ruter is in close dialogue with its operators, and that they are taking various measures to prepare. The measures include, among other things, that some operators have increased staffing, so that they have more people at work.

Ruter also has the operations center upstairs which monitors the traffic closely.

He nevertheless encourages travelers to follow along, both out of the window and on Ruter.no.

– The snow can quickly affect traffic, so check the route you are going on, he says.

He says that they are prepared for the snow, and that they hope it will go as smoothly as possible.
