Danby Choi – also an active and current participant in TV 2’s “The Game” – used the last Easter Sunday – 1 April – to try to trick Norwegians into thinking that his darling, Subjekt, had been bought by Amedia – the same media group that he in recent weeks has criticized in the debate about media diversity.

But this is no April Fool’s joke the following day. On 17 May, he will give a speech and lay a wreath at Henrik Ibsen’s grave at Vår Frelser’s cemetery in Oslo.

– Danby is a fearless and strong champion of freedom of expression. It was also Ibsen. It was only natural to choose someone who dares to criticize, says member of the May 17 committee in Oslo, Mehmet Kaan Inan (H).

He quotes the poet chief’s “An enemy of the people” to describe Danby Choi.

– “The strongest man in the world, he is the one who stands alone”. That describes Danby well, and I hope many people will make the trip to Vår Frelsers Gravlund on national day, says Mehmet Kaan Inan.

Choi himself did not hesitate to accept.

– It is not often that I am humble, but this time I almost have to. An immigrant boy from Oppsal in east Oslo, I would never have thought that. Now I think mum will be really proud – maybe for the first time? Koreans are strict, chuckles Danby Choi to VG.

In a slightly more serious tone, he admits that there are certainly some who will react to his giving the keynote address at Henrik Ibsen’s grave on National Day itself.

– But perhaps Henrik Ibsen himself would have been happy? He was, if possible, more contrary than me. Ibsen exposed the authorities’ abuse of power and exposed double standards and taboos. As Subjekt editor, I am inspired by the tireless work he did. He was curious and disrespectful and tore down closed doors, says Choi.

– What does May 17 really mean to you?

– 17 May is a celebration of the values I hold most important in life. What the Constitution has in common with my own social mission is, among other things, freedom of expression, which is a battle I have devoted my life to fighting. It is a great honor that I will be allowed to remind you of the values that the Constitution is a celebration of.
