The 14-year-olds walked along Hardangervidda

--

The twins Zack and Mattias Wheatley and their friend Sigve Rognehaug started the trip on the Saturday before Easter.

The boys are only 14 years old.

The train from Oslo S transported them to Finse. They slept there for one night before setting out on the long trip – along the Hardangervidda.

On Good Friday, they arrived at the finish line and celebrated with Easter eggs.

– It has been a very good trip. It has been a bit stormy, but it has gone very well, says Sigve (14).

– The best thing has been sitting in the tent and cooking and enjoying yourself, says Zack (14).

– It has been nice to enjoy the moments and take pictures and such, says Mattias (14).

In total, they have walked around 120 km alone, with sleds weighing 40 kilos each.

Every day they have had to melt ten liters of water, so that they can drink and cook.

– We have brought more than enough food, we have also eaten a lot of sweets. More candy than food, says Zack Wheatley.

– It was porridge in the morning and Snickers for lunch, he says further.

There is one thing that all three agree has been a bit difficult on the trip. There are the uphills and getting out of the sleeping bag in the morning.

– And at the end of the day it gets a bit tiring to walk, you just go slower and slower, says Zack.

At Haukliseter, Sigve Rognehaug’s mother was ready with Easter eggs when they arrived on Friday afternoon.

– We have been working towards this for a long time now. We decided a year and a half ago on a scouting trip. We have worked towards this goal until now, we don’t know what is next, says Sigve.

But for some, the bed is next.

What I’m most looking forward to is probably sleeping in my own bed, says Mattias.

Slept outside and alone

The boys have been camping outside every night, and the parents have been keeping a close eye on how the trip has gone.

There has been no coverage in the area, so the parents have only communicated with the boys through a satellite phone.

They have sent short messages during the trip.

NEW TRIP?: On the trip, the 14-year-old boys had a little chat about the way forward. Among other things, a trip to Greenland. Photo: Sigve Rognehaug/Private

The phone has also shown where on the mountain the boys are.

There has been no holiday this Easter break, I’ve been super stressed, but I’m confident about them. They have practiced a lot and I was confident that they knew what they were doing, says Sigve’s mother, Hilde Rognehaug.

The trip has added flavor. In the telephone conversation with VG, Sigve mentions Greenland as a possible trip for the group of friends.

– We have talked about taking a trip to Greenland.
