More expensive subscription to new streaming service

--

In March, the news came that the streaming services HBO Max and Discovery+ have merged.

The new service named “Max” will be launched in Norway and the rest of the Nordic region on 21 May.

Christine Sulebakk, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, said in that context that the service will collect popular series and films from both platforms.

Three new subscription categories were also presented.

Can keep the discount, but at what price?

In the presentation of Max, it was emphasized that those who took advantage of HBO Max’s “half price for life” campaign would be allowed to keep this benefit.

With just under a month to go before the service is available to the masses, the new subscription prices for Max have been announced.

According to Tek.no, it turns out that those who have a discount can keep it, but that the subscriptions will be transferred to the new “Standard” subscription. This is both more expensive and less beneficial.

The newspaper’s source is a tipster who has been in contact with HBO Max’s customer service.

The “Standard” subscription does not include 4K streaming, HDR or Dolby Atmos sound as the current subscription does. In addition, it is NOK 40 more expensive per month for regular users and NOK 20 more expensive for those with half price.

Almost three times as expensive

To gain access to 4K streaming and Dolby Atmos sound, you must upgrade to the “Premium” subscription. For those with a half-price subscription, this means a breach of the terms of the agreement and their discount will disappear.

From the half-price subscription, which currently costs NOK 45, to the new subscription, you have to shell out NOK 114 more per month, for the same benefits.

Communications manager at Warner Bros, Marianne Aambø, tells Tek.no that all existing subscribers will retain their current package’s functions.

When asked if she has a comment for the half-price customers who lose the streaming quality they have on their current subscription, she replies:

– These customers will retain the functionality they have today over a longer period.

She does not elaborate on the statement further.
