An owner of the electric Fisker Ocean SUV had the car totaled after a small door dent which the insurance company initially estimated would cost 910 dollars to repair (around NOK 10,000).

According to Carscoops, owner Joy Wanner suffered a dent after someone hit the open car door of her car. She therefore took the car into the workshop to get a price estimate for the repair, so that she could send this to the insurance company.

Initially, she was presented with an estimate of $910 to fix what is said to have been superficial damage to the door, as well as a replacement of a broken hinge. However, she was also told that the price could increase, all the while the workshop was not familiar with the car.

But it would therefore prove impossible to repair it at all. It was not possible to obtain spare parts for the two damaged components, and after 30 days the insurance company ended up paying 53,303 dollars to Wanner to completely wreck the car – around NOK 575,000.

Bad experience with Fisker

In addition to the fact that Fisker itself must have been just as impossible to get hold of as the spare parts, Wanner tells Carscoops that she has also had a number of problems with the car in the past.

These include an unreliable navigation system, a cheaply made key fob, and on one occasion she is said to have also been locked in her own car.

The bad experience with Fisker Ocean eventually resulted in her walking away from the brand in its entirety, and instead bought a Tesla Model Y.

On the verge of bankruptcy?

Fishermen have been in rough weather lately. The Ocean, which is their first model, has received criticism for unfinished software and some quite important features that have been missing – including things like adaptive cruise control.

The company has also been in major financial problems, and recently cut the price of all Ocean stock cars by up to NOK 200,000 – while warning that they might not be able to meet their warranty obligations due to the financial situation. In other words: the risk of bankruptcy is real.

Fisker has produced its cars at contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Austria, pausing production in March to reduce inventory and save money.

In connection with the publication of Magna Steyr’s quarterly figures before the weekend, both CEO Swamy Kotagiri and CFO Pat McCann said they did not expect any further production from Ocean.

According to McCann, this will affect their top line by around 400 million dollars – around 4.5 billion kroner – in 2024.

At the end of April, it also emerged that Fisker had failed to pay interest on just over NOK 90 million on a loan they had, and they wrote to the American financial authority SEC that they could have to declare bankruptcy within 30 days if they did not got help.

The company was also removed from the New York Stock Exchange in March because the value of the stock was too low.
