The knife manufacturer Victorinox has decided to go in new directions.

The iconic pocket knife – also known as the Swiss army knife – has been produced since 1891.
But these are new times, acknowledges managing director Carl Elsener, who is the fourth generation boss of the family business Victorinox.
– We are concerned about increasing legal regulation of knives due to the violence around the world, Elsener tells Bloomberg.
He refers to regulations in Britain and Japan, among others, which only allow the carrying of a knife for work and outdoor activities.

Therefore, the Swiss manufacturer will now make the Swiss army knife without a knife.
– In some markets, the knife blade is considered a weapon. I am thinking of creating a tool that can be useful for cyclists. Cyclists need specific tools, but not necessarily a knife blade, says Elsener according to The Telegraph.
He adds that they have already developed a tool specifically adapted to golfers.
Elsener’s great-grandfather, Karl Elsener, started the company when he was commissioned to supply knives to the Swiss Army in 1891. The Swiss Army Knife was patented six years later.
According to The Telegraph, Victorinox currently produces around 10 million Swiss Army knives a year.

In Great Britain, it is currently only permitted to carry a knife in public if it is foldable, and the blade is shorter than 7.62 centimetres.
For all other knives, one must have a good reason, such as that it must be used for work, for a national costume or worn for religious reasons.
Norway also has similar rules. In this country, you can only carry a knife “in connection with work, outdoor activities or other worthy purposes”.
